Danaher Moulton advises Sonic Civil Investments on Stornoway acquisition

Danaher Moulton is pleased to have advised Sonic Civil Investments on its successful acquisition of Stornoway Pty Ltd, a transaction that will create one of Tasmania’s largest private employers and marks a significant milestone for the Tasmanian civil infrastructure sector.

Established in 1976 as a small quarrying enterprise in Northern Tasmania, the Stornoway Group has grown into a leading national infrastructure services operation with expertise spanning road maintenance and asset management, bridge maintenance and asset management, water and wastewater treatment, civil and maintenance works, traffic management design and specialist access services. Family-owned for over 50 years, Stornoway operates across Tasmania and Queensland, serving public and private sector clients with a workforce of approximately 120 staff.

Sonic Civil Investments is a Launceston-based, employee-owned civil infrastructure services group with diversified investments in the Tasmanian civil sector. Sonic’s portfolio includes Shaw Contracting, a leader in road construction, dam building, irrigation, civil infrastructure and mining and Hardings Group, a northern Tasmania specialist in subdivisions, road upgrades, underground asset installation, asphalt surfacing and line marking.

The acquisition brings Sonic’s combined workforce to over 450 employees, strengthens its capability across complementary service lines and positions the group as a significant force in Tasmanian and national infrastructure services.

The Danaher Moulton team was led by Partner Steven Wambeek, with support from Senior Associate Elizabeth Gregory, working alongside financial advisers BDO.

Commenting on the transaction, Steven Wambeek said:

“Transactions like this highlight continued demand for scale and capability in infrastructure services, and the opportunity for founders to build and realise significant value with the right strategic partner. Sonic’s acquisition of Stornoway is a compelling example of what can be achieved when strong local businesses combine with a clear strategic vision.”
